In Broomtown, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests. Specializing in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, we offer nationwide testing centers to conduct these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol, ETG, and other specialized testing options.

The preference for hair follicle drug tests has increased in recent years. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation programs. Key benefits include a longer detection window of up to 90 days, observed sample collection, and high resistance to tampering, although urine tests are more reliable for recent drug use detection, particularly within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. By collecting hair samples close to the scalp, it is possible to obtain a detection window of approximately three months for alcohol and drug use. The collection of hair is easy, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (approximately equivalent to a #2 pencil's thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for assays and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We advocate for weighing the sample on a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is missing, a similar volume of body hair can be taken. Specifically referring to head hair means scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses different types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result primarily includes four steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage where the sample is logged into the laboratory system. This step confirms proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completes any missing data not recorded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary examination for drug abuse. Although Screening is a cost-effective method for excluding drug consumption on most samples, a confirmed screen is necessary for court acceptability. Any samples testing presumptively positive during Screening require an additional confirmation.

If Screening indicates a sample is presumptively positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are drawn from hair at much lower concentrations than seen in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as needed. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests detect drug use for an extended period of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter periods.
  • Challenge to falsify: It is extremely challenging to falsify a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Records historical usage: It reflects a pattern of drug use across a duration, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of recent detection: Drugs become evident in hair approximately 5-7 days following use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result discrepancies: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth can influence the concentration of drug substances in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the testing focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Broomtown, AL, surpasses urine tests due to its superior detection capabilities and reliability. This method offers a longer detection period, often up to 90 days, while urine tests only cover a short timeframe. Hair tests provide a comprehensive view of substance use and are less susceptible to tampering compared to urine tests.

Employers in Broomtown favor hair tests over urine tests for their zero-tolerance policies. Hair tests provide more reliable and accurate detection of drug use over an extended period, enhancing workplace safety and compliance. The robustness of hair testing ensures it remains a trusted method in detecting substance use.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Broomtown, AL, proves invaluable for employers. While urine tests typically detect recent use, hair tests cover up to a 90-day period, providing a comprehensive view of an employee's or applicant's substance use history, which is crucial for informed decision-making.

This longer detection period offers employers insight into consistent patterns of use, rather than isolated incidents. Hair follicle tests are essential for assessing an individual's substance history, ensuring employers maintain a safe and drug-free workplace in Broomtown, Alabama.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Broomtown, AL, offer a tamper-resistant method of drug testing, minimizing the risk of sample adulteration. Unlike urine tests, which can be manipulated, hair tests provide reliable results as samples are collected under observation, ensuring authenticity and integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
