Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Bucks, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this area and provides testing centers throughout the U.S. capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, you should have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head, or body hair can be used for testing drugs, alcohol, or other tailored hair analysis options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a more prevalent method for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This test is favored by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. A key advantage is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under supervision, and being nearly impossible to manipulate. Yet, for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests still provide the highest accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds onto a historic record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the structure of the growing strand. When obtained near the scalp, it offers roughly a three-month detection period for various substances. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and definitive analysis. For EtG, additional tests, or those beyond 10 panels, 150mg of hair is desired. It's advisable to weigh the hair on a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we refer exclusively to the scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any outstanding data entry that an electronic chain of custody system may not cover.

Screening conducts an initial assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening provides a cost-efficient way to rule out drug use in most cases, any positives from this stage need to be verified for court acceptability. Samples that are potentially positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

When a sample indicates a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. Drugs are drawn out from the hair at considerably reduced concentrations compared to other methods (for instance, urine or oral fluid), contributing to the challenge of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing if required before confirmation. From Accessioning through to Confirmation, the procedural integrity aligns with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation under ISO / IEC 17025."

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection period: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug use up to three months, surpassing urine tests with a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to tampering: Hair drug tests are complex to alter, resulting in more dependable outcomes.
  • Substance use chronology: They offer an overview of drug usage patterns over time, rather than indicating only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Limit in detecting recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after about a week.
  • Costlier: Compared to other drug testing methods, hair drug tests tend to be pricier.
  • Variability in outcomes: Aspects such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually focuses on the hair strand and not the follicle residing under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
