Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chastang, Alabama. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair assessments and maintains testing facilities nationwide capable of conducting such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, the judicial system, and Substance Abuse professionals are increasingly opting for hair over the conventional urine tests. Hair tests are chosen by employers with strict drug-free policies, courts, and those on probation, offering several advantages. They provide a longer detection span, usually up to 90 days, are conducted under observation, and are difficult to falsify. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting drugs used in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers within its fibers. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can reveal a substance use history spanning up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) is optimal, providing 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for testing. For EtG, additional tests, or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise weighing the hair on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair specifically pertain to scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory drug test processing include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, the sample initially enters the lab system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-effective method for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation to be legally acceptable. Any samples that test positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

In cases where Screening results are positive, additional hair is taken from the initial sample to prepare it for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from the hair at a much lower concentration than other methods like urine or oral fluid, which makes hair drug testing the most challenging technique to execute.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, while urine tests have a much shorter duration.
  • Hard to evade: The likelihood of manipulating a hair drug test is very low, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, unlike tests that detect only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to identify recent consumption: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is often pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests," these actually evaluate the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
