Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Chunchula, Alabama. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with locations in every city Nationwide to conduct these tests. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is required, either from the head or body. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other custom options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for drug screening. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair tests over urine tests. Hair tests are favored by employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation officers. The main advantage of hair testing lies in its longer detection window, which can span up to 90 days, through an observed collection process that is difficult to tamper with. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized for its exceptional ability to detect drug and alcohol use. Hair offers a comprehensive history of substances through the encapsulation of biomarkers within the strands' fibers as they grow. When cut near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe of up to three months for drugs and alcohol. The collection process of hair is straightforward, it’s relatively tamper-proof and shipping is convenient.

A 1.5-inch segment from approximately 200 hair strands (roughly matching a #2 pencil in size) located closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is deemed the best sample size for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a specimen measuring 150mg is advised. It's advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair may be gathered. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug testing results involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary inclusion of a sample into a lab's system. This includes checking that the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and inputting any extra data not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a swift initial check for drugs. While Screening efficiently rules out drug consumption in most cases, any positive result within Screening must undergo Confirmation to be validated for legal purposes. The samples that test presumptively positive in Screening necessitate subsequent verification.

A sample yielding a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase results in more hair being extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are extracted at considerably lower concentrations than in other testing methods like urine or oral fluid, adding to the complexity of hair drug screening.

The Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed using techniques such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Every sample labeled presumptive positive is cleansed before Confirmation if required. The complete lab procedure, from Accessioning through to Confirmation, is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, compared to the shorter periods detected by urine tests.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides data reflecting a pattern of drug use over an extended period, rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair typically 5-7 days after use.
  • Cost implications: Conducting hair drug tests generally costs more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth rate can influence drug metabolite concentrations found in hair.

Note: Commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", this examination analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
