Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Cleveland, Alabama. For individuals needing a hair or alcohol screening, we excel in hair testing and boast testing facilities across all U.S. cities. Generally, hair from the crown or elsewhere, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, suffices. These tests evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle analyses. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are favoring these tests over traditional urine analyses. Hair testing offers longer detection windows, up to 90 days, with a closely monitored procedure, minimizing the chances of tampering. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as they grow. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a three-month detection period for drugs and alcohol. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches containing around 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg, the optimal amount for both testing and confirmation. For EtG, special requests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg amount is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the hair. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair covers all other types of hair (face, armpit, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial introduction of a sample into the laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any extra data entry not included in an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails a preliminary rapid test for detecting substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to discard drug usage on most samples, any positive screening must be validated to be court admissible. Samples with presumptive positives in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the primary sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other techniques (like urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing is among the most challenging processes.

Confirmation of any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples indicating a presumptive positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes inspection under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring the results are more precise.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display a timeline of drug use over time, instead of only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assays tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing outshines urine testing in Cleveland, AL, through unmatched detection accuracy and reliability. Traditional urine tests often miss past substance use, a gap hair testing fills with its extended detection period.

The reliability of hair tests over urine tests presents a compelling advantage. Employers can trust in their outcomes, minimizing the risks associated with sample adulteration typically seen in urine analyses.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle tests in Cleveland, AL, provide an extensive detection window of up to 90 days. This allows employers to gain a thorough overview of an individual's substance use history, surpassing the limited timeframe of other tests.

This extended detection period captures consistent drug use patterns, offering a detailed account of any sustained use. Employers value this aspect for making informed hiring and retention decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
