Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug analysis in Crossville, Alabama. For either a hair drug or alcohol examination, we specialize in hair testing with facilities in all major cities across the nation to conduct the test. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, usually from the head or body. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

Over the years, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent for detecting substance use. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with strict drug policies, judicial bodies, and probationary individuals commonly use these tests. A primary advantage is the extended detection period of up to 90 days, with an observed collection method that is difficult to tamper with. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a formidable method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair, hair offers a comprehensive history of substance use. When obtained from near the scalp, hair can provide a detection window of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to send for analysis.

A 1.5-inch portion, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four central steps in processing a drug test in the lab are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab’s process. This step includes ensuring the sample is properly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data work not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary examination for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a logical approach to negate drug use in most samples, any positive results must be verified to be allowed in court. Samples that are suggestively positive during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample suggest positivity during Screening, more hair will be taken from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are separated from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging methodology.

Confirming any positive screening result is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that test suggestive positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 benchmarks.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is remarkably difficult to deceive a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can present a timeline of drug use over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: It takes about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be costlier than other methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual analysis pertains to the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The advantages of hair follicle testing over traditional urine tests are clear in Crossville, AL. Enhanced detection accuracy and reliability set hair tests apart, ensuring that even traces over a longer period are identified. Unlike urine tests, which are more limited in detection, hair testing offers a broader assessment window, making it a superior choice for those seeking comprehensive verification of substance use.

Extended Detection Window

In Crossville, AL, hair follicle testing offers an extended detection window that can trace drug use up to 90 days. This extended period provides employers with a more comprehensive understanding of an applicant's or employee's past substance use. Such reliability in long-term detection ensures that businesses can make informed decisions based on thorough and substantial evidence of substance history.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The hair follicle testing method in Crossville, AL, significantly reduces the risk of sample tampering. It offers a secure way to verify the authenticity of a specimen, ensuring reliable and unquestionable results. Unlike urine tests, which are susceptible to manipulation, hair tests provide a definitive and unassailable record of substance use, crucial for maintaining confidence in testing outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
