In Dixie, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. For those needing drug or alcohol hair tests, we have numerous centers across all major cities nationwide. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, our hair tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other substances with customizable testing options available.

The prominence of hair follicle drug tests has risen as an integral method in recent years. They are favored by employers, courts, and professionals dealing with Substance Abuse over the traditional urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and people on probation often rely on these tests. The chief advantage is a longer drug detection period—up to 90 days—making it virtually cheat-proof. However, for drugs used within the past 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as an effective method, hair testing serves as a robust way to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. By taking hair samples close to the scalp, one can obtain a detection range of up to approximately three months for both alcohol and drugs. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, resisting tampering attempts, and ensures easy transportation.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or panels over ten, a 150mg sample is preferred. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. Reference to head hair specifically indicates scalp hair. In contrast, body hair encompasses all other types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The process for analyzing a drug test in a laboratory entails four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples are initially processed into the lab’s system. This step confirms that samples are properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing information not included in the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening executes an initial rapid assessment of potential drug use. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient method to disregard drug use in most samples, any positive findings need verification for potential court admissibility. Samples that are tentatively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

A presumptively positive sample in the Screening phase requires additional hair from the initial collection, preparing it for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing exceedingly intricate.

Confirmation of a positive result in Screening utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is evaluated in compliance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can track drug usage for as much as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have limited detection periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: A hair drug test is exceptionally hard to manipulate, boosting result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It can reveal patterns of drug use across time, beyond just recent drug activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to capture recent drug use: It generally takes 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than alternate drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and growth differences among individuals can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests," these assessments analyze the hair strand rather than the follicle found beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
