Accredited Drug Testing provides hair follicle drug testing in Elmore, Alabama. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body are required. Hair tests can check for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle tests are increasingly used for drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts prefer these over urine tests. Hair tests benefit zero-tolerance policies and probation by offering a long detection period up to 90 days and a secure, observed process. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests are more accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for revealing substance and alcohol use. By embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair, it offers a prolonged record of alcohol and other drugs. A sample gathered near the scalp can provide an approximate 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair samples are easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with about 200 hair strands (akin to a #2 pencil's diameter) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg, which is the optimal sample amount for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent volume of body hair can be used. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair includes all other varieties (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially processed into a lab's system. This involves checking that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

The Screening phase is a preliminary assessment for drug abuse. Although it's a cost-efficient approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any samples that show a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive during Screening, further hair is taken from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a notably lower concentration compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation as required. The full laboratory procedure, spanning from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair accreditation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Prevention of cheating: It's exceedingly challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivery of historical data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug usage over time, not merely recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often costlier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While frequently called "hair follicle tests", this test evaluates the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Elmore, AL, triumphs over traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analysis can detect patterns of substance use over an extended period, giving a comprehensive view of an individual's history. This long detection window is crucial for employers who wish to maintain a drug-free environment.

The reliability of hair testing is unmatched by urine tests. While urine tests might miss occasional users or recent abstainers, hair testing provides a consistent indication of drug use that is nearly impossible to evade. This positions hair testing as the preferred choice in ensuring workplace safety and compliance with zero-tolerance policies in Elmore, AL.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Elmore, AL, offers an extended detection window, making it an ideal method to review an individual’s substance use over a prolonged period, up to 90 days. This comprehensive scrutiny is advantageous for employers seeking insights into potential employees' or current staff's drug history, supporting informed hiring and retention decisions in Elmore.

The extended monitoring period through hair tests surpasses other methods, like urine tests, which are limited to detecting recent drug use. In Elmore, the comprehensive detection provided by hair analysis guides employers in understanding long-term behavior patterns that facilitate safer and more trustworthy work environments.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Elmore, AL, hair follicle testing is a tamper-resistant method, reducing risks of sample adulteration significantly. Unlike urine tests, which can be easily manipulated through sample dilution or substitution, hair tests provide a robust and reliable diagnostic that is virtually impossible to alter, ensuring authentic results.

Hair tests offer unquestionable results, furnishing Elmore employers with peace of mind. This method's resilience against tampering helps maintain the validity of drug testing programs, ensuring the outcomes are honest and reflective of true substance use behaviors among employees or applicants.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
