Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Eutaw, Alabama. For those in need of hair drug or alcohol testing, our specialization in hair tests is unmatched. Our testing facilities are available in cities across the nation capable of performing hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body can be used. Hair tests may detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or support other tailored testing options.

Recently, the trend for drug screening has leaned towards hair follicle tests. Various employers, judiciary entities, and Substance Abuse counsellors often prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by companies enforcing strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and individuals on supervision. Hair follicle tests provide an extensive 90-day drug detection period, collected under observation and challenging to tamper with, although urine tests are more precise for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. The growing hair strand captures biomarkers, providing a long-term record of substance use. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for up to nearly three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to obtain, challenging to tamper with, and simple to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches that comprises around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step verifies the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is an initial swift check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screen demands confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples that yield a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary verification.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to conduct.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive are cleaned prior to confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Hard to deceive: Manipulating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insights: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variation: Factors such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the actual test examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
