Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Fackler, Alabama. Whether you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities in every American city ready to conduct the evaluation. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used for testing substances like drugs, alcohol/ETG, or customized hair analysis options.

Recently, the practice of drug testing has increasingly included hair follicle testing. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts often mandate hair testing over urine testing. Employers with strict anti-drug policies, along with courts and probation officers, rely on this method. The key advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, under direct observation, with minimal risk of manipulation. However, for drug use within five days, urine tests maintain their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means to identify drug and alcohol consumption. This method offers a prolonged record of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the growing hair strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug usage for around a 3-month period. This collection method is not only easy and hard to tamper with but also straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil in thickness), will produce 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen is recommended. If scalp hair isn’t an option, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. Specifically, head hair refers only to scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing at the laboratory consists of four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample processing into a lab system. This stage verifies the secure sealing and proper shipment of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) randomly, and completes any necessary data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug usage in most samples, positive findings require confirmation for legal proceedings. Samples with presumptive positivity in Screening necessitate further verification.

For presumptive positives in the Screening phase, additional hair from the original sample undergoes preparation for Extraction. Here, drug extraction from hair occurs at concentrations much lower than alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging to execute.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples are washed as necessary before confirmation. The complete process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection time.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It indicates a pattern of drug use over time, rather than only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: A timeframe of 5-7 days is necessary for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expensive: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Individual factors like hair color and hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
