Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug assessments in Fairfield, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol analysis is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is adept in hair analysis and operates facilities in every city nationwide where hair testing is conducted. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body may be used in most situations. Hair examinations may reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or allow for other tailored testing choices.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent for drug screenings. Many workplaces, judicial bodies, and Substance Abuse experts now mandate hair tests instead of classic urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those overseeing probation. The key advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, usually up to 90 days, ensuring almost unbreachable accuracy, though for detecting drug use within the last 5 days, urine analysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair encapsulates a protracted timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strands. When gathered near the scalp, hair can offer a detection duration of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (roughly the circumference of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred sample for evaluation and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair may be obtained. In discussions regarding head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test result comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves registering a sample into a lab’s system. This action includes confirming that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched correctly, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening encompasses a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Screening serves as an economical method to exclude drug utilization in most samples, though a positive indication requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples tentatively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

If a sample is tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which explains why hair drug screening is the toughest methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which have a decreased detection timeline.
  • Challenging to deceive: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, yielding more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It can display a trend of drug use over a time span, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days before drugs become identifiable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are generally more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Factors such as hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite often being termed as "hair follicle tests", the test itself inspects the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Fairfield, AL, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing by offering unparalleled detection accuracy and reliability. Hair follicle tests provide a longer detection window, thus offering a more comprehensive picture of an individual's drug usage history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
