Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Faunsdale, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is extensive, with testing locations available Nationwide. Typically, hair from the crown of the head or body—at least 1.5 to 2 inches long—can be used. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other specialized testing options.

In recent years, the implementation of drug testing has more often included hair follicle analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are increasingly opting for hair drug tests over the traditional urine method. Hair tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal entities, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period, often up to 90 days, in an observed collection setting, making it very hard to falsify. However, for substance use in the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has evolved into a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed record of alcohol and drug usage by enclosing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, less prone to tampering, and easy to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches comprising around 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of hair is advised. It is suggested to measure the hair sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not an option, a proportionate amount of body hair can be used. By head hair, we indicate scalp hair exclusively, whereas body hair includes all other types (like facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab handling of a drug screening outcome consists of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning concerns the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's database. It involves ensuring the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing remaining data entries absent in an electronic custody system.

Screening conducts an early rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug usage from most samples, a positive result must be verified to be court-valid. Any samples identified as presumptively positive in Screening demand additional verification.

When a sample is found presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), which presents hair drug testing as the most challenging technique.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that appear presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is monitored under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug evaluations can trace drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, which enhances test accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It can delineate a trend of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days before drugs become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth rates may influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis is performed on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Testing Triumphs over traditional urine tests in Faunsdale, AL lies primarily in detection duration and accuracy. Hair follicle testing captures a wider window of substance use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
