Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screens in Forestdale, Alabama. When requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in this field with centers across all cities nationwide equipped for such evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the head are needed, or body hair can be used. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer specialized hair testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle tests are more frequently used in drug testing protocols. Employers, legal bodies, and substance abuse specialists are opting for hair testing over regular urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation favor this method. The key advantage is prolonged detection of drug use, up to 90 days, with observed collections and minimal chances of tampering. However, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now viewed as a discerning method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair can reveal up to roughly a 3-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to adulterate, and conveniently shippable.

A 1.5-inch section consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advised. We advocate for weighing the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, it is specific to scalp hair. Body hair references all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four core procedures in the laboratory handling of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the primary processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process validates that the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a brief preliminary check for drugs of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-effective method to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for court admissibility. Any samples presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and arranged for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are removed from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug screening presents the most complex methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is extremely difficult to circumvent a hair drug test, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can display usage patterns over time, beyond recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal variations in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often dubbed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
