Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Gardendale, Alabama. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing with centers across all U.S. cities. To conduct a test, a minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is generally required. Hair tests can be customized to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG among other testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become a more prevalent method compared to traditional testing means. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. These tests are preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, the legal community, and probation departments. Key advantages of hair follicle testing include its extensive detection window, lasting up to 90 days, and the difficulty in tampering with results. Nevertheless, for detecting recent drug use, within a 5-day period, urine tests remain the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures a long-term account of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When taken from near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section containing roughly 200 hairs (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the ideal portion for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests surpassing 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a lab’s system. This comprises checking that the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data input not provided by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening concerns a quick preliminary check for drug use. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be valid in legal contexts. Samples that appear positive in Screening thus need further confirmation.

If a sample is deemed positive during the Screening step, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluids), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening finding is undertaken using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug testing can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: It is highly challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, making the results more reliable.
  • Offers historic data: It can illustrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, beyond just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs typically become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
