Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Glencoe, Alabama. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our proficiency in hair testing ensures that our centers, available nationwide, can conduct these tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body. Such tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with tailored testing options.

More recently, hair follicle drug tests have seen increased utilization for drug testing. Organizations, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now often choose hair tests over urine tests. These tests are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and probationary programs. The key advantage lies in extended detection, spanning around 90 days, observed during collection, and resistant to tampering, although urine tests remain best for recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol intake. It offers an extended record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers in the structure of the hair as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over an approximately 3-month period. Hair is easy to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional options, or testing exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. We advise using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be used. By head hair, we mean scalp hair solely. Body hair comprises all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The steps in lab processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the primary processing of a specimen into a lab’s database system. This step includes ensuring the sample is sealed and sent correctly, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and recording extra data not provided through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug presence in most samples, any positive result must be validated for legal proceedings. Samples that test presumptive positive during Screening require further confirmation.

If the Screening indicates a presumed positive, additional hair is taken from the specimen for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from the hair at a reduced concentration compared to other methods (like urine or saliva), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

For any positive screening result, Confirmation is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples marked as presumptive positive are cleaned prior to Confirmation as necessary. The full lab procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is supervised under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a briefer detection period.
  • Challenging to falsify: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It delineates a pattern of drug use over time rather than just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair testing is costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle drug testing is increasingly becoming the preferred method for assessing drug use in Glencoe, AL. Unlike urine tests, hair testing provides an extended detection period, making it ideal for employers who need a clear understanding of an individual's substance history. The superior accuracy of hair tests compared to urine tests makes it nearly impossible to tamper with the results, ensuring integrity and trustworthiness.

The efficacy of hair testing is evident when comparing its detection rates to traditional urine tests. Hair tests can uncover patterns of drug use that urine tests might miss, offering a more comprehensive overview. This capability empowers employers and agencies to maintain rigorous drug-free policies with confidence.

Extended Detection Window

In Glencoe, AL, one of the significant advantages of hair follicle testing is its extended detection window. By analyzing hair samples, drug use can be traced back as far as 90 days, providing a panoramic view of an individual's history. This timeline exceeds the capabilities of standard tests, offering a broader perspective on substance use patterns.

This extensive detection period is particularly beneficial for employers looking to ensure a drug-free workplace. It not only helps in making informed hiring decisions but also in sustaining a consistent standard of safety and compliance in the workplace. The capability of hair tests to reach far back into an individual's history gives a detailed understanding of their reliability.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Glencoe, AL, stands out for its tamper-resistant nature. Unlike other drug tests, hair samples are challenging to adulterate, ensuring that results remain genuine and credible. The collection process is straightforward yet secure, significantly minimizing chances of manipulation.

The inability to easily alter hair samples makes hair testing a trustworthy method for employer screenings. This characteristic reassures employers and agencies that they can base decisions on reliable data. The robustness of hair testing against tampering instills confidence in its outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
