Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening in Gordo, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers located nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are required from the crown or elsewhere on your body. Hair evaluations can be done for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, drug testing methods have increasingly involved hair follicle tests. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are often opting for hair tests over standard urine tests. These tests benefit employers with zero-tolerance for drugs, the court system, and individuals under probation. The key advantage is the longer detection window for drug usage, which spans up to 90 days. These tests, collected under observation, are difficult to tamper with. Despite this, urine tests remain the gold standard for screening drug use within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an efficient method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other substance use by embedding biomarkers in the hair strand’s fibrous structure. When taken near the scalp, this type of hair can reveal drug and alcohol use over a period of up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easily transportable.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising roughly 200 hair strands (akin to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp produces around 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for initial screening and verification. For EtG, supplemental tests, and/or when exceeding 10-panel tests, a 150mg sample is advised. It is suggested to assess the sample’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unobtainable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be secured. "Head hair" specifically refers to hair from the scalp, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning denotes the initial integration of the sample into the laboratory framework. This step includes confirming the sample was properly sealed and sent, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic custody chain.

Screening acts as a preliminary assessment for commonly abused substances. Although Screening is an economical means to dismiss substance use for most samples, a positive Screening result necessitates confirmation to be legally defensible. Samples flagged as possibly positive during Screening demand an additional verification.

Should Screening suggest a positive result, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen for the Extraction phase. During this step, substances are isolated from hair in much smaller concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), a reason hair drug screening is notably challenging to execute.

Confirmation of positive outcomes from Screening is accomplished using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All suggestive positive samples undergo cleansing before confirmation if required. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation complies with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify substance consumption for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine evaluations which have a more limited detection span.
  • Resistant to manipulation: The integrity of hair drug evaluations is hard to undermine, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: Provides a usage pattern over time rather than merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It takes an estimated 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are typically costlier compared to other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual growth differences can impact the drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
