Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Grady, Alabama. Whether you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities available in every city nationwide to conduct these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as cater to custom hair testing needs.

Over the past few years, hair follicle drug testing has gained popularity as a reliable method. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. This is especially true for those organizations enforcing zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation programs. The key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection timeframe, reaching up to 90 days, with an observed collection process that's hard to tamper with. However, for drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers as the hair grows. When taken close to the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (about the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp secures 100mg of hair, the suitable sample for analysis and validation. For EtG, extra assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be gathered. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the initial handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This consists of verifying that the sample was adequately sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any remaining data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial swift inspection for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly means to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be permissible in court. Samples showing presumptive positive in Screening need further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positive in the Screening stage, additional hair is gathered from the original specimen and set for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than in other methodologies (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is conducted via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a reduced detection span.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical usage insights: It offers a pattern of drug utilization over time, not only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result fluctuations: Variations such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being called "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

When comparing hair follicle tests to urine tests in Grady, AL, it's evident that hair testing offers numerous advantages. Detection accuracy is a hallmark of hair tests, as they can detect drugs over a longer duration. Unlike urine tests, hair tests are difficult to cheat, providing peace of mind for those relying on their results.

Furthermore, the reliability of hair follicle testing surpasses traditional methods. Its capability to exhibit substance presence over a 90-day span provides employers and institutions with a comprehensive view unmatched by urine tests.

Extended Detection Window

One of the primary advantages of hair follicle drug testing in Grady, AL, is the extended detection window. This type of testing can unveil drug usage spanning up to 90 days, offering a thorough insight into a person's history of substance intake.

Employers benefit significantly, as this method allows them to assess an individual's lifestyle choices over a prolonged period rather than a mere snapshot in time. Such extended detection aids in creating a safer and drug-free environment.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
