Accredited Drug Testing offers robust hair follicle drug examination services in Hamburg, Alabama. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing focuses on hair examination, with facilities Nationwide ready to administer such tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body are sufficient. Hair examinations can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized testing solutions.

Lately, the approach to drug testing has shifted towards including hair follicle trials more commonly. Various employers, judicial bodies, and Addiction Specialists now prefer hair drug assessments over typical urine tests. This testing is favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and probationary individuals. Its major advantage is detecting drug use up to 90 days prior, under observed conditions, making it nearly unforgeable. However, urine tests remain precise for recent drug use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection span of nearly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, it is advisable to use 150mg of the specimen. The specimen should be weighed on a jeweler’s scale. If no scalp hair is available, a comparable amount of body hair may be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary step of processing a sample into a lab’s system. This includes ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for illicit drugs. Even though Screening is a cost-efficient way to determine drug usage for most samples, a positive result from Screening must be confirmed for it to hold up in legal proceedings. Samples showing a presumptive positive in Screening need follow-up confirmation.

In cases of a presumptive positive outcome during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if required. The full laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for as long as 90 days, while urine tests have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Hair drug tests are very hard to tamper with, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Provides historical data: Offers a history of drug use over a given period, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to be more expensive compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair color and personal variance in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hamburg, AL, hair follicle testing offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. Boasting a longer detection period, this method captures a comprehensive substance history, enhancing accuracy. Urine tests, mainly for recent use, fall short in offering extensive substance timelines, where hair analysis excels.

Employing advanced methodologies, hair follicle tests outperform standard urine evaluations in detection fidelity and reliability. The longer detection window and accurate reporting make hair analysis an attractive choice for employers aiming to maintain a safe, drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Hamburg, AL reveals substance use over an extensive timeframe, up to 90 days. This method grants employers a detailed view of one's substance history, far surpassing the detection capabilities of other testing means, which typically cover only recent use.

With a prolonged detection window, hair analysis paints an accurate picture of an individual's lifestyle choices. The ability to examine up to 90 days back is invaluable for employers assessing potential hires or monitoring ongoing employee compliance with drug policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests in Hamburg, AL provide a tamper-resistant method for drug screening. Unlike other samples, hair is less prone to adulteration, ensuring unwavering reliability in results. This feature is crucial for maintaining the integrity and trustworthiness of the testing process.

The secure nature of hair testing deters attempts at falsifying results. Providing verifiable outcomes, hair analysis rises as a dependable method, safeguarding against manipulation and offering peace of mind for those relying on its accuracy and consistency.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
