Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hatchechubbee, Alabama. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you require, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing. We are experts in hair testing, with testing centers available across all major cities nationwide equipped to perform hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body suffices. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for specific requests.

Over recent years, drug testing processes have increasingly incorporated hair follicle drug testing. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals now prefer a hair test over a traditional urine test. Employers with strict no-drug policies, courtroom mandates, and individuals under probation supervision often rely on hair follicle tests. Their primary advantage is the significantly extended detection window for drugs, with efficacy lasting up to 90 days. The collection process is directly observed, reducing cheating risk to almost zero. Yet, for drug use detection within the last five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an efficient method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. If taken near the scalp, hair can yield up to a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, somewhat hard to alter, and straightforward to ship.

A 1.5-inch sample consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we specifically refer to scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four principal stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This encompasses confirming the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and carrying out any supplementary data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid evaluation for drugs of abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-effective means to rule out drug presence in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally admissible. Samples that are presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Preparation. During this phase, drugs are removed from hair at a notably lower concentration than observed in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated in alignment with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a more limited detection window.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, ensuring results are more accurate.
  • Offers historical insight: It can show a pattern of drug usage across time, rather than just recent use.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes around 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While often labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
