At Accredited Drug Testing, we offer extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hatton, Alabama. Our specialty is in hair testing for drugs and alcohol, with facilities across the nation, including all major cities, where these tests can be conducted. Typically, hair from the crown or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required for the test. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as customized substance options.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle testing. This method is favored by many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts over standard urine testing. Hair tests are crucial for companies with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and probation check-ups. A key advantage is their extended detection window, generally up to 90 days, collected under observation to ensure integrity. Despite this, urine tests remain the most precise method for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug exposure by capturing biomarkers within the hair's growing fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp results in about 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. When referencing head hair, it specifically means scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Summary

The integral steps in processing a test result in the lab include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial step where a sample enters a lab's system, ensuring it was sealed and sent correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing information not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for substances of abuse. Although effective in ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive result in Screening requires Confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptively positive samples in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples tentatively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are separated at much lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most complex method to execute.

Positive Screening results are validated using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are washed before confirmation if needed. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is notably tough, leading to more reliable outcomes.
  • Chronological data: It offers insights into drug use trends over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Demerits:

  • Cannot show recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is usually pricier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
