Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Hendrix, Alabama. Specializing in hair-related drug and alcohol tests, our national testing centers, including those in all major cities, are equipped to perform these evaluations. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body suffices. Tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored options for hair analysis.

Recently, drug testing protocols have increasingly integrated hair follicle analyses. Employers, judiciary bodies, and substance abuse experts have shown a preference for hair tests over traditional urine analyses. Zero-tolerance employers, court systems, and probationary schemes often depend on hair tests due to their extended detection capability—up to 90 days—observed during collection and difficult to falsify, but urine tests remain optimal for identifying recent drug use within a short timeframe of 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a robust method for detecting substance and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extensive timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When taken near the scalp, hair can furnish about a 3-month detection span for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 strands of hair (approximately the breadth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal steps in the laboratory management of a drug test outcome: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning covers the primary handling of a sample into a lab's system. This entails confirming that the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid evaluation for substances of misuse. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to negate substance usage in most samples, a positive screen must be affirmed to be valid in court. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

In cases where a sample is presumptively positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug analysis is the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as required. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair label and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug assessments can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine assessments which have a reduced detection period.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is incredibly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thus enhancing the accuracy of outcomes.
  • Supplies historical information: It can reveal a pattern of substance use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent intake: Drugs take about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result disparities: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the tests actually analyze the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Hendrix, AL, hair follicle testing stands out against urine testing, offering several advantages. Unlike urine tests that typically detect recent use, hair tests offer a retrospective view of drug consumption. This wider detection window, up to 90 days, provides stronger evidence of substance habit. Employers favor this method for its thoroughness, reliability, and comprehensive data contributing to workplace safety policies.

The efficiency of hair follicle testing eclipses urine testing in Hendrix, AL, particularly in terms of accuracy and reliability. While urine tests can be manipulated, hair tests offer a robust alternative immune to many forms of tampering. The hair sample's greater resistance to external contamination adds another layer of dependability, ensuring results reflect true substance usage, critical for high-stakes scenarios that demand accurate detection.

Among the critical factors favoring hair follicle testing over urine tests in Hendrix, AL, is the extended detection timeline. The ability to capture a longer drug use history enhances the credibility of test results, whereas urine tests are often limited to detecting substances used within a short timeframe. This ability to provide a detailed substance use profile is a significant reason why employers opt for hair testing methodologies.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Hendrix, AL, offers a significant advantage with its extended detection window. Unlike other testing methods, it provides insight into drug use that spans up to 90 days. This comprehensive range allows for a thorough assessment and understanding of an individual's substance history, beneficial for employers who seek to maintain a drug-free workplace.

Employers in Hendrix, AL, value hair follicle testing for its ability to reveal long-term drug use patterns, stretching back as far as three months. This feature significantly outperforms shorter detection methods, ensuring a more complete picture of an individual’s history. By covering a wider timeframe, hair testing supports robust drug-free policies and informed decision-making.

For those in Hendrix, AL, the extended detection window of hair follicle tests is unmatched. This capability to showcase a detailed 90-day drug history makes it a preferred choice for discerning employers and institutions. By leveraging this testing method, organizations can better evaluate candidate and employee substance use, aligning with stringent safety and employment standards.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Hendrix, AL, hair follicle testing distinguishes itself with superior tamper resistance. Unlike other testing methods, hair tests significantly minimize the risk of sample adulteration, providing reliable and unquestionable outcomes. The robustness of this methodology ensures that test results genuinely reflect an individual's substance use, making it an essential tool for maintaining integrity in drug testing.

The steadfast nature of hair follicle testing in Hendrix, AL, greatly reduces opportunities for tampering compared to urine tests. Its intrinsic resistance to manipulation ensures more accurate and trustworthy results, eliminating concerns about the veracity of the test. This characteristic enhances trust in the testing process and supports objective decision-making.

With hair follicle testing, tampering becomes a non-issue. In Hendrix, AL, this method is favored for its inherent resistance to common adulteration tactics. The certainty of obtaining an untainted sample is crucial for reliable results, providing employers and authorities confidence in their drug testing procedures and outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
