Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Highland Lake, Alabama. If you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our specialty lies in hair testing, with centers across all cities Nationwide equipped for hair testing. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be tested. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored choices for hair testing.

Recently, using a hair follicle drug test is becoming more prevalent in drug testing. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts often prefer a hair drug test over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, courts, and those on probation due to its longer detection period, offering a 90-day history, observed collection, and difficulty in cheating. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by holding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It's easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or more than 10-panel tests, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is absent, a comparable quantity of body hair can be taken. Referring to head hair denotes only scalp hair, whereas body hair denotes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in the laboratory handling of a drug test result consist of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This process checks that the sample was sealed and sent correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any extra data entry overlooked by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial fast assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly method to negate drug usage in most samples, a positive result needs confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Any samples testing potentially positive in Screening must undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows potential positivity in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original specimen and arranged for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any preliminary positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All potentially positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The complete laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to fake: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, leading to more precise results.
  • Presents historical data: It can exhibit a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair in approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests usually demand higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself, and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
