Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Hodges, Alabama. For individuals requiring hair drug or alcohol analysis, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair assessments and operates testing facilities nationwide capable of conducting hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of the head or body can be used. Our hair examinations are equipped to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or custom testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for substance screening. Various employers, legal bodies, and addiction professionals now prefer a hair test over the conventional urine analysis. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug policies, legal courts, and those overseeing probation conditions. A significant advantage of hair follicle analysis is its extended detection range, identifying drug use up to 90 days, and being conducted under supervision, making it difficult to falsify. Nonetheless, for drug use detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

Hair evaluations have emerged as a robust method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs through biomarkers entrapped within the strands. When collected proximal to the scalp, it can offer nearly a 3-month timeline for alcohol and drug detection. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to mail.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of about 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp provides 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis. For EtG, additional tests, and those exceeding 10-panel assessments, 150mg of hair is optimal. It’s advisable to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In cases where scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair can be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair; body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in laboratory processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab's system. This includes confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any extra data input lacking from an electronic custody chain.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Although Screening serves as a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples presenting as presumptively positive during Screening demand secondary verification.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for preparation in Extraction. During this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which illustrates why hair drug screenings are among the most challenging procedures.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Tests using hair can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have limited detection periods.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Hair drug tests are difficult to alter, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: Hair samples can showcase patterns of drug use over an extended timeframe, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests often carry a higher cost compared to other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual growth variances may influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
