In Holly Pond, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we excel in this testing and operate centers in cities nationwide to facilitate it. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. Hair testing options encompass drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other custom assessments.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often favor this method over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are chosen by employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The notable advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window, which can reach up to 90 days, involves an observed collection process, and is virtually tamper-proof. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for drug use detected within the past five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the strands’ fibers as they grow. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection window of roughly up to three months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample that is 1.5 inches and contains roughly 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG tests, additional panels, or tests beyond 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen is suggested. In cases where scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. When referencing head hair, it pertains strictly to scalp hair, whereas body hair includes any other types such as facial or axillary.

Process Overview

The primary steps in processing a drug test in the laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with integrating a sample into the laboratory system. This step entails checking that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and filling in any missing data not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid check for abused drugs. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Any sample that tests positive during Screening demands a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample indicate a positive result during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample to prepare for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (such as urine or saliva), highlighting why hair drug analysis is notably challenging.

Any positive result from screening is confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS technologies. Samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. From start to finish, the laboratory process—from Accessioning to Confirmation—is examined in accordance with both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can find drug use extending back up to 90 days, unlike urine testing which offers a shorter detection period.
  • Integrity: It is extremely hard to manipulate results in a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It can outline drug use patterns over a duration, rather than just immediately preceding use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to catch recent usage: Drugs only become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier compared to other testing methods.
  • Result disparities: Elements like hair pigment and individual hair growth variance can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Even though it’s commonly labeled as a “hair follicle test,” the procedure examines the actual hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
