Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Holtville, Alabama. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we excel in this field with centers available nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored for specific needs.

The popularity of hair follicle drug testing has increased significantly. Many employers, courts, and addiction specialists now prefer it over urine tests for its reliability. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation officers often choose hair tests because they detect substance use for up to 90 days, are collected under strictly observed conditions, and are difficult to tamper with. For recent drug use detection, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as a powerful method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drug use by securing biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When cut close to the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period as long as 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and verifying. For EtG, additional tests, or examinations exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advisable. It is suggested to measure the sample's weight with a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in processing a drug test sample in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial stage of sample processing in a laboratory's system. It includes checking that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any leftover data not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use for most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples that are presumptively positive in Screening do need a secondary confirmation.

If Screening yields a presumptive positive, additional hair is taken from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screening outcome is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for as many as 90 days, compared to the shorter window for urine tests.
  • Hard to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers history data: It discloses a pattern of drug usage over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: Drugs need about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the procedure evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Holtville, AL, outperforms traditional urine tests by offering superior detection capabilities. This method is notably advantageous in identifying long-term substance use compared to urine testing, which only reveals recent drug intake.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
