Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Hytop, Alabama. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this domain, offering hair testing facilities across all U.S. cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or fully tailored testing solutions.

Recently, there has been an increased reliance on hair follicle drug tests for substance screening. Courts, employers, and professionals dealing with Substance Abuse prefer this over traditional urine tests. This method is preferred by employers with strict no-drug policies, judiciary systems, and individuals undergoing probation. The key advantage is an extended detection timeline of up to 90 days, completed through direct observation, minimizing the possibility of tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests remain the best choice for detecting recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is viewed as a formidable method to detect the use of alcohol and drugs. Hair maintains a timeline of drug and alcohol consumption by capturing markers in the strands of growing hair. When clipped near the root, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and straightforward to package.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the dimension of a #2 pencil) cut nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, and tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. It’s best to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equal quantity of body hair might be used. When referring to head hair, this pertains specifically to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (i.e., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample within a lab’s system. This step checks that the sample was appropriately sealed and mailed, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data necessary beyond what the electronic chain of custody system provides.

Screening is a preliminary swift check for drug usage. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a positive outcome needs confirmation to be legally valid. Samples showing a potential positive result in Screening need further verification.

If a sample indicates a potential positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is removed from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than methods like urine or saliva tests, which highlights the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples indicating a potential positive result undergo washing before confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a brief detection window.
  • Challenge to deceive: It is notably challenging to falsify a hair drug test, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It provides a timeline of drug usage over prolonged periods, not confined to recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Result inconsistencies: Elements like hair color and personal disparities in hair growth may influence the level of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Despite being commonly known as "hair follicle tests," this test analyzes the hair strand itself and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
