Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Kellyton, Alabama. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol examination, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair evaluations, with facilities in all Nationwide cities ready to conduct your hair analysis. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body are sufficient for this test. We offer analysis for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing choices.

Recently, the rise in conducting drug screenings has leaned towards hair follicle analyses. A growing number of employers, legal bodies, and Substance Abuse specialists prefer a hair test over the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationary individuals predominantly utilize hair follicle drug assessments. The chief advantage of this test lies in its extended detection capability, spanning up to 90 days, alongside its observed collection process, making it challenging to deceive. Nonetheless, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers within the strands as the hair grows. When taken near the scalp, hair can indicate substance use for a period extending up to roughly three months. The collection process for hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 strands (roughly equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg, considered the preferred quantity for both initial screening and follow-up confirmation. For EtG tests, additional tests, and assessments involving more than 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is recommended. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent volume of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other hair types such as facial, axillary, etc.

Process Overview

The drug testing procedure in the lab is composed of four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial setup of a sample within a laboratory’s framework. This stage confirms that the sample arrives sealed and intact, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputs any necessary details not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is economical for excluding drug usage in the majority of specimens, to be legally acceptable, a positive screening result must be confirmed. Those samples with a presumptively positive Screening require an additional verification process.

If the Screening indicates a possible positive, extra hair is obtained from the original specimen for the Extraction phase. In this phase, drugs are extracted at a considerably lower concentration from hair compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which is why hair testing is among the most complex methodologies for drug detection.

Final confirmation for any positive result from Screening is conducted through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples with presumptive positive results undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory procedure, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated according to the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair tests can reveal drug use over a 90-day period, unlike urine tests which cover a shorter duration.
  • Reduced tampering capability: Hair tests are difficult to tamper with, offering more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical consumption data: They can show drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A duration of 5-7 days is needed before drugs can be identified in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug tests usually cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the procedure analyzes the hair strand instead of the follicle located under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
