Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Knoxville, Alabama. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing, with facilities across all cities nationwide ready to conduct such tests. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair for the procedure. Tests analyze for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other specific needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained traction over other methods. More employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair testing as opposed to traditional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, legal bodies, and those on probation utilize hair tests due to their extended detection ability, spanning up to 90 days, all gathered under supervision, making them almost impossible to tamper with. Yet, for very recent drug use, within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the go-to for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now acknowledged as a compelling method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-standing record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the maturing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period extending up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is straightforward to gather, moderately resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, supplementary tests, and/or evaluations beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest determining the specimen’s weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be obtained. When mentioning head hair, we strictly mean scalp hair. Pertaining to body hair, it encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result is composed of four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial processing of a specimen into a laboratory's workflow. This process ensures the specimen was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening administers a preliminary rapid evaluation for substances of abuse. While Screening is an economical means to dismiss drug usage on the bulk of specimens, a positive result must be verified to be permissible in legal contexts. Any specimens that test presumptively positive during Screening mandate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a specimen indicate presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction preparation. Within this phase, drugs are separated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to alternative methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring why hair drug screening is the most arduous methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed preceding confirmation as required. The entire laboratory protocol from Accessioning through Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug examinations can perceive drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests possessing a shorter detection scope.
  • Challenging to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It unveils a drug use trend over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: It requires roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become discernible in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations are typically pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth discrepancies can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
