Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in La Fayette, Alabama. Whether seeking a drug or alcohol test using hair samples, Accredited Drug Testing is your expert in hair testing, with facilities across the U.S. After collecting a 1.5 to 2 inch sample from the scalp or body, hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other types.

Recently, drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair tests over the traditional urine tests. These hair tests are especially effective for employers with zero-tolerance policies, judicial bodies, and those under probation. One major advantage is the extended detection range, often up to 90 days, with verifiable collection, making it difficult to falsify. However, for detection within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the benchmark.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is perceived as an influential method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a detailed record of alcohol and drugs by encasing biomarkers in the fibers of the continually growing strand. Collected near the scalp, hair offers an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to alter, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch segment comprising about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be used. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test encompasses four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This process confirms the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for drug abuse. While Screening efficiently rules out drug usage for most samples, a positive result requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate secondary confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods such as urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug testing as the most challenging practice to undertake.

Confirmation for positive screens is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is subjected to review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests recognize drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter timeframe.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a chronological usage pattern over time, not solely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become noticeable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Individual differences such as hair color and growth rate can influence metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite being commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the skin.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in La Fayette, AL stands out when juxtaposed with traditional urine testing. It possesses superior detection accuracy and reliability, offering a clearer picture of substance consumption.

Urine tests, while useful, fall short in terms of the scope that hair follicle testing provides. Hair testing reveals a more extensive history of drug use, commonly over 90 days, ensuring no stone is left unturned in drug detection efforts.

Extended Detection Window

With hair follicle testing in La Fayette, AL, the detection window spans up to 90 days, significantly outlasting urine tests. Employers find this extended detection period instrumental in assessing an individual's substance use history.

The longer detection period offered by hair follicle tests assists employers in gaining a full understanding of an applicant or employee's behavior, leading to better-informed decisions regarding workforce safety.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle tests conducted in La Fayette, AL greatly minimize the chances of sample tampering. These tests provide a level of security that ensures unquestionable and reliable results.

Traditional tests have vulnerabilities, but hair testing circumvents these by being inherently more resistant to alteration, ensuring integrity. This makes hair testing a trusted choice for accurate substance use detection.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
