Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair sample drug testing services in Laceys Spring, Alabama. Our expertise includes hair drug and alcohol testing, and our extensive network of locations nationwide ensures accessibility. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary, and both scalp and body hair can be tested. Options include drug, alcohol/ETG testing, or tailored hair testing solutions.

Recent years have seen a shift towards hair follicle drug tests in drug screening. Employers, judicial bodies, and substance abuse experts often favor hair tests over urine tests. They are crucial for organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial requirements, and probation compliance. Hair tests offer a lengthier detection timeframe, up to 90 days, with observed collections that are difficult to tamper with. However, recent drug use within five days is best detected with urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present up to a three-month period of detection for alcohol and drugs. It is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample of about 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil in thickness) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, an optimal sample for analysis. For EtG, additional screens, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, a similar amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair mean only scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for a drug test result encompasses four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s workflow. This step verifies proper sample sealing and shipment, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug presence in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed to be valid in legal proceedings. Any samples yielding a presumptive positive in Screening need additional confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptive positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. This process extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most complex methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screen is performed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The complete laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is overseen under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection span.
  • Resistant to tampering: It is immensely difficult to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It reveals a drug utilization pattern over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot reveal recent usage: Drugs become detectable in hair within an estimated 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Laceys Spring, AL, hair follicle testing stands superior to urine tests due to greater accuracy and reliability. By detecting drug use over a longer period, hair tests offer enhanced insights into an individual's substance use habits. In contrast, traditional urine tests provide a limited window of detection, often missing long-term use patterns.

Employers prefer hair tests for their difficulty to manipulate, ensuring the integrity of screenings. This robustness against tampering is crucial, especially for organizations enforcing strict drug-free policies, thereby reducing potential risks associated with defaulting employees.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Laceys Spring, AL, offers employers an invaluable tool for assessing substance use. By covering up to 90 days, hair tests provide a comprehensive view of an individual's drug use history, aiding in more informed decision-making regarding employment or compliance checks.

This broad timeframe emphasizes the effectiveness of hair testing in uncovering sustained drug habits, unlike other methods that capture only recent usage. Employers benefit from a more detailed analysis, contributing to a safer and more informed workplace environment.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle drug testing in Laceys Spring, AL, significantly reduces tampering risks, ensuring reliable and unquestionable results. The nature of hair samples makes them difficult to adulterate, maintaining the integrity of the testing process and instilling confidence in drug screening outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
