Comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services are offered by Accredited Drug Testing in Ladonia, Alabama. Whether for drugs or alcohol, hair testing is our specialty, with centers nationwide ready to conduct these exams. Hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches on the head or body is usually required. Testing covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

Lately, hair follicle testing has become a favored method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals often choose this over traditional urine tests. It's preferred for zero-tolerance workplaces and probationers thanks to its extended detection of up to 90 days, under observation, minimizing cheating. For recent substance use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol use. By embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand, hair provides a chronological record of alcohol and other drugs. When cut near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to three months for alcohol and other drugs. Collecting hair is easy, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Obtaining a 1.5-inch sample of roughly 200 hair strands (the approximate width of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, the perfect quantity for both screening and verification. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding ten panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest weighing the hair using a jeweler's scale. If head hair isn't accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types such as facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test result involves four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

During Accessioning, samples undergo initial processing in a lab's system. This step ensures the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills in any additional data not entered via an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves an initial assessment for drug use. While cost-effective for excluding drug usage in most cases, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal validation. Screens that are presumptively positive demand secondary verification.

Should a sample test preliminarily positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial batch and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening a more challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screening result is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation when necessary. The complete laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Resistance to tampering: Cheating is highly challenging in hair drug tests, yielding more accurate results.
  • Chronological data: Hair drug tests can demonstrate a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetectable: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing modes.
  • Variability in outcomes: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination actually analyzes the hair strand, not the root beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
