Accredited Drug Testing offers hair follicle drug testing services in Leesburg, Alabama. Our company specializes in hair tests for drugs and alcohol, available at numerous test centers across the country. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches is required on the crown or elsewhere on the body for accurate assessment. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with customized testing options.

These days, hair follicle drug testing is gaining popularity as a method for screening drugs. It is increasingly preferred by employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse professionals over the conventional urine test. Ideal for enforcing zero-tolerance policies, used in legal settings, and for individuals under probation, hair tests provide a detection window of up to 90 days. While challenging to tamper with, urine tests still lead in accuracy for usage within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When obtained near the scalp, hair provides a detection period of up to around 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is uncomplicated, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, it is advised to collect 150mg of the specimen. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be obtained, an equivalent quantity of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, we exclusively refer to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The key stages in laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning constitutes the initial handling of a sample within a laboratory’s system. This phase includes validating that the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails an initial cursory examination for drugs of abuse. Though it is an economical approach to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to be accepted in legal proceedings. Any samples that are provisionally positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

In instances of presumptive positivity during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All provisionally positive samples undergo necessary washing prior to confirmation. The full laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is appraised under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is quite challenging to manipulate a hair drug test, resulting in more precise outcomes.
  • Provides chronological data: It reveals a time-based pattern of drug use, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand instead of the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

The reasons why hair follicle testing outshines traditional urine tests in Leesburg, AL, are numerous. A broader detection window and increased accuracy place hair testing at an advantage. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
