In Lehigh, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis. For those needing a hair-based drug or alcohol examination, they specialize in this testing and have centers across the nation ready to perform the task. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the head or other body parts. Tests assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug examinations have become more common in drug testing practices. This method is often preferred by employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse experts as an alternative to urine tests. Employers, courts, and probation individuals use hair testing due to its stringent drug use detection policies. The benefit lies in its extended detection period, up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making it hard to fake. Yet, for recent use, urine tests remain precise within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a long-term record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to 3 months for various substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tamper-resistant, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation processes. For tests with EtG, additional components, and/or panels exceeding ten, a 150mg specimen is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be used. The term 'head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' refers to all other types such as facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial incorporation of a sample into the laboratory system. This step involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped and assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), along with finalizing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial assessment for substances of abuse. While this phase is cost-efficient for eliminating drug usage in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Any samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

For samples that yield a presumptive positive result in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which underscores the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation as needed. From Accessioning to Confirmation, the comprehensive laboratory procedure is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair recognition and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests display a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to tampering: The chances of cheating a hair drug test are very low, thereby ensuring more reliable results.
  • Reveals drug use patterns: It uncovers a pattern of substance use over time rather than only capturing recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It takes around 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Variables like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the level of drug metabolites present in hair.

Note: While commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
