Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug tests in Leighton, Alabama. Whether you require a drug or alcohol hair test, we are the experts in this field. Accredited Drug Testing provides testing centers across cities Nationwide to conduct hair tests. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our analysis covers various substances including drugs and ETG for alcohol, with custom options available.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method for drug screening. Many entities like employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals have opted for this over the regular urine test. It's favored by organizations with strict drug policies, courts, and on probation individuals. The standout advantage of this test is its extensive detection window, reaching up to 90 days, through monitored collection and providing barriers to test manipulation. Yet, for drug use detected in the last 5 days, urine testing remains the precise choice.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures a long-term record of substance consumption by embedding biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When hair is collected near the scalp, it offers a detection window for substances like alcohol and other drugs spanning up to roughly three months. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is advisable. It is suggested to measure the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four primary steps in the lab processing of a drug test: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning starts with entering a sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample's seal and transport were correct, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not captured by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening performs a rapid check for substance abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage for most samples, confirmation is necessary for any positive result to hold up in legal settings. Samples identified as presumptively positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample return as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the initial sample for Extraction. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at concentrations considerably lower than those in methods like urine or oral fluids, making hair drug testing the most challenging method to conduct.

The Confirmation of all positive screening results utilizes GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Prior to Confirmation, all presumptive positive samples are cleansed as necessary. The whole laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests reveal substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, ensuring accuracy in results.
  • Provides trend data: It offers insight into substance usage patterns over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Recent use undetected: It generally requires 5-7 days for substances to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing usually involves higher costs compared to other methods.
  • Result variability: Influences like hair color and individual variations in hair growth can impact the drug metabolites' concentrations in the hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand itself rather than the follicle below the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
