Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analyses in Lilita, Alabama. If you're in need of a hair-based drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in this method is unmatched, with testing hubs available in every city across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body can be used. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer tailored options for your needs.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methods has shifted towards hair follicle assessments. Numerous employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are now opting for hair tests over conventional urine analyses. Hair follicle evaluations are favored by organizations enforcing strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probationers. Their primary advantage is an extended detection timeline, lasting up to 90 days, with the process being closely monitored to prevent tampering.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair offers an extended history of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers in the strands of growing hair. When sourced near the scalp, hair can indicate alcohol and drug usage within an approximate 3-month period. Hair sampling is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

By collecting a 1.5-inch sample of approximately 200 hair strands (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, one can obtain 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair can't be provided, a comparable quantity of body hair may be gathered. In the context of head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in the laboratory processing of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning deals with the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures that the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid check for drug use. While Screening is a cost-effective method to eliminate drug use for most samples, any positive screen needs confirmation to be legally admissible. Any samples with presumptive positive results in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample returns a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen for preparation in the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing a challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is carried out through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples with presumptive positive results are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Lengthy detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter period of detection.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It can reveal a timeline of drug usage over time, as opposed to only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It requires around 5-7 days for drugs to become noticeable in hair.
  • Higher costs: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Possible result discrepancies: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Though commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the methodology examines the hair strand and not the underlying scalp follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
