Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug analysis in Madrid, Alabama. If you're in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our specialization in hair testing ensures thorough results. We provide testing facilities nationwide, proficient in conducting hair analyses. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body, hair tests assess for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized screening options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing methods. Various employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals favor hair tests over traditional urine tests. Companies with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probation departments employ these tests for their extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days. Hair tests involve a monitored collection process and are nearly foolproof, though urine tests remain most effective for detecting recent drug use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair examination is recognized as a significant approach for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair holds an extended timeline of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Collected near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection timeframe of around three months for alcohol and drugs. Gathering hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A collected 1.5-inch sample of about 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil size) closest to the scalp offers 100mg of hair, the perfect sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair may be utilized. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair indicates all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

Laboratory processing of a drug test is divided into four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning incorporates the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab’s system. This entails confirming the sample was sealed and transported satisfactorily, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data input not provided by an automated chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial fast assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a budget-friendly means to negate drug consumption in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be accepted legally. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening need subsequent confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive during Screening, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lesser concentrations compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most complex methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening output is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation as required. The whole lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a briefer detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating a hair drug test is notably difficult, heightening the accuracy of results.
  • Offers historical data: It provides a sequence of drug use over a stretch of time, beyond recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally entail higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Variables such as hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
