In Manack, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If you require a hair test for drugs or alcohol, you can rely on our specialized services available nationwide. Having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is generally necessary, with hair analyses available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customizable options.

Recently, hair follicle testing has increasingly replaced traditional drug test methods. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse counselors now prefer this over standard urine tests. Zero-tolerance policy employers, judicial systems, and probation programs favor hair tests due to their extended detection window, which can last as long as 90 days. Although urine testing remains more effective in identifying drug use within the past five days, hair testing offers nearly tamper-proof results.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is perceived as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive history of substances by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. When collected near the scalp, it offers up to an approximate 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, relatively tamper-resistant, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch portion consisting of about 200 strands (similar in width to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional screenings, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is not available, collect an equivalent quantity of body hair. By head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps in a laboratory's drug testing process are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This step ensures that the sample was sealed and delivered appropriately, attaches a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any remaining data entry not completed by an electronic custody protocol.

Screening is a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is a budget-friendly approach to dismiss drug presence in most samples, a confirmed positive is necessary for legal validity. Samples presumed positive during Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples presumed positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at concentrations notably lower than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging approach to administer.

Confirmation of any positive initial result is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are presumptive positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if required. The entire laboratory operation from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditations.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can identify drug usage for a duration of up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a more negligible detection period.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, thus enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers chronological data: It provides a timeline of drug consumption over a duration, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Lacks immediate detection: Drugs typically become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing often incurs higher costs compared to alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the examination is of the hair strand, not the hair follicle underneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Manack, AL has recognized the superiority of hair follicle over urine testing. The ability to uncover drug use reliably over a longer timeframe makes hair tests a choice tool for employers seeking accuracy. Unlike urine tests that offer limited detection windows, hair testing records substance use with much greater reliability and prolonged scrutiny.

Employers and probation officers find hair follicle tests beneficial due to their resistance to manipulation. Where traditional urine tests fall short in detection duration, hair testing shines. This ability to vividly map out an individual’s drug history renders it indispensable when truly knowing an applicant or employee's past is necessary.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in Manack, AL, presents an unmatched advantage. Spanning up to 90 days, these tests give a thorough insight into an individual's drug use history. For employers, this is vital in determining the honesty and suitability of potential employees.

Through a hair sample, an employer can trace back almost three months of drug use, which urine testing cannot accomplish. This window of detection provides a more comprehensive view of an individual’s habits, allowing for more informed decisions. The long detection period reassures employers of the effectiveness of their drug screening procedures.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in Manack, AL, greatly minimizes tampering risks. Unlike other testing methods, hair samples are tougher to adulterate, thus ensuring the reliability of the results. This resistance to manipulation gives business owners confidence in their testing procedures.

The hygiene and proficiency of the collection process make it difficult to evade or alter results. The tamper-resistant nature of hair follicle tests is pivotal for employers who demand truthfulness and accuracy, knowing they are receiving an honest account of substance use within their workforce.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
