Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in McDonald Chapel, Alabama. If you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we excel in this area, with testing facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body can be used. Hair tests screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customized options.

Lately, methods for drug testing have increasingly included hair follicle tests. Many employers, legal institutions, and substance abuse specialists prefer these over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, the judiciary, and probation officers. Their main advantage is detecting drug use over about 90 days, collected in a monitored setting, and are nearly foolproof. However, for recent drug use within 5 days, urine testing remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

The application of hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair archives biomarkers within its strands, offering an extensive timeline of alcohol and drug use. When hair is gathered near the scalp, it can reflect alcohol and other drug presence for up to nearly three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, relatively tough to tamper with, and convenient to mail.

An optimal hair sample includes a 1.5-inch segment comprising around 200 strands, akin to the diameter of a #2 pencil, taken near the scalp, providing 100mg of hair ideal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's preferable to weigh the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t obtainable, an equivalent amount of body hair serves as an alternative. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a laboratory drug test comprises four fundamental stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the initial treatment involving the integration of a sample into a lab system. This encompasses validating the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigning it a unique Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any missing data entries that might not have been supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for common drug abuse. Although economical in ruling out drug use for most samples, a positive result from a screen must undergo further confirmation to hold up in legal settings. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening must proceed to a secondary confirmation stage.

With presumptive positives during Screening, more hair is taken from the initial specimen for Extraction. This process isolates drugs from hair at a lower concentration than alternative methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of performing hair drug screening.

Positive results in Screening advance to Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with a presumptive positive status are cleansed as needed before confirmation. The whole laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to scrutiny by the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can monitor drug usage for up to 90 days, surpassing the detection limits of urine tests.
  • Difficult to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is significantly challenging, enhancing result reliability.
  • Tracks historical usage: It can map drug usage patterns over time, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent usage detection: Hair requires approximately 5-7 days before drugs are noticeable.
  • Expense: Generally costs more than other drug test methodologies.
  • Result variability: Hair color and individual growth variations can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often labeled as "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand, not the sub-scalp hair follicle.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing in McDonald Chapel, AL
Hair testing has redefined the landscape of substance screening in McDonald Chapel by offering advantages over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are less vulnerable to being tampered with and boast a longer detection period, which can uncover a history of drug use up to 90 days. This provides a superior solution for employers seeking comprehensive assessments.

The robustness of hair follicle tests comes from their resistance to manipulation. Unlike urine tests, which might be subject to trickery, hair tests maintain integrity by capturing historical usage patterns. For those requiring stringent drug-free environments, this reliability is unparalleled.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
