Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Melvin, Alabama. When you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing comes into play. Our testing centers, present in all cities across the nation, can conduct a hair test. Generally, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is sufficient. Hair analyses can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing solutions.

In recent times, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method in drug testing practices. This type of testing is increasingly sought after by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals, often replacing the conventional urine test. Employers with zero-tolerance drug use policies, courts, and individuals on probation often opt for hair drug tests. A key advantage of hair follicle testing is its much longer drug detection window, usually up to 90 days, observed during collection, and difficult to cheat. However, for drug use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of alcohol and drug exposure by securing biomarkers in the forming hair strand's fibers. When collected close to the scalp, hair offers up to around a 3-month window for detecting alcohol and drug use. Hair is easy to collect, resistant to tampering, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and comprising roughly 200 hair strands (around the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, an ideal sample size for both screening and confirmation processes. For EtG, specialized assessments, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a larger sample of 150mg is suggested. We advise weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be collected. Note that when citing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (including facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result processing in the laboratory consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial processing into a laboratory's system. It involves confirming the sample was sealed and dispatched correctly, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering additional data not supplied through an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening ensures an initial rapid assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug usage among most samples, any positive findings require confirmation to be legally acceptable. Samples with presumptive positive results in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is drawn from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this step, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than those found using other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), signifying hair drug screening as the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive Screening result is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized in line with the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation along with accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests' shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: It offers insights into drug use patterns over time, beyond just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: A period of approximately 5-7 days is required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally entail higher costs than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Concentration of drug metabolites in hair can be influenced by hair color and individual hair growth differences.

Note: Although frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the test evaluates the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
