Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Mentone, Alabama. For anyone requiring a hair drug or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert, with centers located in all cities across the nation ready to conduct hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or another body part can be used. Hair tests are available for drug, alcohol/ETG, and other tailored hair testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has been adopted more frequently for drug screenings. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are utilized by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, as well as individuals on probation. The key advantage of hair drug tests is their extended detection time, typically covering up to 90 days. They are conducted via an observed process and are almost impossible to tamper with. For detecting drug use within the previous 5 days, however, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug usage by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeline extending up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. The collection of hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section made up of approximately 200 hair strands (about as thick as a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable volume of body hair may be used. By head hair, we mean exclusively scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial intake of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It includes ensuring the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplementary data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial swift check for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use on most samples, a positive screening result must be validated for it to be permissible in court. Samples that are preliminarily positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at concentrations much lower than those in alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), which presents a challenge unique to hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screened result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation if required, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug consumption for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection times.
  • Low incidence of tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is a considerable challenge, ensuring more reliable outcomes.
  • Historical insight: It reveals a trail of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks detection of recent consumption: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to register in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally have higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within the hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests", the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
