Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Miller, Alabama. If you require a hair drug or alcohol screening, our expertise in hair testing spans nationwide, with centers in every major city equipped to conduct tests. Typically, a hair sample of 1.5 to 2 inches from the crown or body is utilized. Our hair tests encompass a range of analyses, including drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other personalized options.

Hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in recent years as a drug testing method. Many employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals now opt for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with strict no-drug policies, legal systems, and probationary programs. The key advantage is an extended detection span of up to 90 days, observed closely, making it nearly invulnerable to tampering. However, for drug use examination within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the hair fiber as it grows. When sampled near the scalp, hair can uncover drug and alcohol use for roughly a three-month span. This method is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of around 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) close to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG enhancements and/or screenings over ten panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. It’s advisable to use a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. Should scalp hair be insufficient, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair, while body hair denotes all other types (e.g., facial, axillary).

Process Overview

The primary stages in processing a drug test in a laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary checking for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a budget-friendly approach to disprove drug presence in most samples, a positive finding needs to be validated for legal admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive result during Screening necessitate a follow-up confirmation.

For samples that are preliminarily positive at Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction stage. Drugs are sourced from hair at lesser concentrations compared to alternative methods (like urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis is notably precise.

Validation of any positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positives undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, adheres to both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug evaluations can reveal substance use history extending up to 90 days, whereas urine assessments offer a briefer window.
  • Difficult to deceive: Altering the outcome of a hair drug test is challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Tracks historical use: It offers insight into drug use patterns over time, not just immediate consumption.

Limitations:

  • Limited recent use detection: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Higher expense: Hair drug examinations are typically pricier than other testing options.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While often dubbed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis scrutinizes the hair strand itself, excluding the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
