In Mount Andrew, Alabama, accredited drug testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing. Whether you require drug or alcohol testing, we specialize in hair analysis, operating centers across cities nationwide. Usually, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is needed. Our tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to meet specific hair testing requirements.

The hair follicle drug test has become more prevalent in recent years. Its adoption is favored by many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over traditional urine tests. Hair tests are vital for zero-tolerance drug policies, probation, and legal proceedings. The key advantage is the extended drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with a supervised collection process making it nearly tamper-proof. Nevertheless, for recent drug consumption within five days, urine tests are still preferred for accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as an archive of alcohol and drug history by securing biomarkers within the strands of the hair in growth. When harvested nearing the scalp, hair can provide up to an estimated three months of detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A segment measuring 1.5 inches of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp delivers 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for assessment and validation. For EtG, supplementary, and/or examinations exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is suggested. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample is advised. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair can be gathered. With reference to head hair, this implies scalp hair only. Body hair pertains to all additional hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental steps in the lab analysis of a drug testing outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial handling of a sample into the lab’s system. This process involves validating that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing any additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening refers to an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Though Screening provides an economical means to exclude drug presence in most samples, any positive findings must be confirmed to be legally acceptable. Samples showing presumptive positivity during Screening require subsequent verification.

When a sample displays presumptive positivity at the Screening stage, additional hair is retrieved from the original specimen and prepared for Extraction. At this point, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than with other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most technically challenging approach.

Confirmation of any positive findings from screening is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positivity are cleansed ahead of confirmation as necessary. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes evaluation under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which offer a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to compromise: The likelihood of manipulating a hair drug test is low, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It facilitates discerning drug use patterns over time, rather than just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It typically requires 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the examination primarily evaluates the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
