In Mount Herman Valley, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether it's for drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair testing, available across Nationwide cities at our testing centers. Typically, you'll need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, which can be from your head or body. Hair tests help identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other testing needs.

Lately, hair follicle drug testing has become a preferred method over traditional urine tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for this approach. Hair tests are favored by entities with zero-tolerance policies, enforced by the courts, and individuals under probation. A major advantage is their longer detection span, reaching up to 90 days, collected under direct supervision, making them difficult to manipulate. However, urine tests remain tops for detecting drug use within a recent 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of these substances by embedding chemical traces within the hair as it grows. When obtained close to the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug use for a period of up to three months. Collecting hair samples is straightforward, relatively tamper-proof, and convenient to send for testing.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (comparable to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both initial screening and subsequent confirmation tests. For EtG tests, additional or more extensive testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is recommended. It's advised to use a precise scale for weighing the sample, like a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be gathered, an equivalent quantity of body hair may suffice. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The drug test laboratory process involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the step where a sample is entered into a lab’s system. This step ensures the sample is properly sealed and transported, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishes any additional entry required beyond the electronic custody chain.

Screening provides a preliminary examination for drug traces. Though cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most cases, positive screening outcomes must be validated to be legally admissible. Samples preliminarily testing positive in Screening require additional confirmation.

A sample indicated as positive during the Screening phase will have more hair drawn from the original sample for Extraction. In Extraction, drugs are removed from hair with much lower concentration levels than other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug analysis particularly challenging.

Confirmation of any screening-evidenced positive result is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumptively positive undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory routine from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated according to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair requirements and the accreditation of ISO / IEC 17025 norms.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug use back up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection period.
  • Challenges in tampering: Cheating on a hair drug test is highly challenging, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reports historical usage: It demonstrates a pattern of substance use over time, beyond immediate past use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to confirm recent use: Drugs appear in hair approximately 5-7 days following intake.
  • Expense: Hair drug analyses are usually costlier than alternative testing technologies.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual growth rate can influence drug metabolite levels in hair strands.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is misleading since the analysis focuses on the hair strand, not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
