In Mountain Creek, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we provide facilities in every city across the nation that can administer these tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is needed from the crown of the head, though body hair can be used. Hair tests can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific substances.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing has shifted towards hair follicle tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now mandate hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, collected under observation ensuring integrity. Although highly effective, urine tests remain the most precise for identifying very recent drug use within a five-day period.

What it is, How it works

Testing through hair analysis has proven to be an effective resource in identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged index of drugs and alcohol by embedding markers inside the fibers of actively growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to around three months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and effortless to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly analogous to a #2 pencil’s width) nearest the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analyzing and confirming. For more intricate tests such as EtG add-ons and those exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is recommended. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler's scale. In case scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent portion of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers only to scalp hair, while "body hair" covers all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The principal stages in the lab analysis of a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the initial integration of a sample into a lab's process. This entails confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any remaining data entries not covered by an electronic custody chain system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug usage in most samples, positive indications require confirmation to be considered valid in a legal setting. Any samples preliminarily positive during Screening demand a subsequent confirmation test.

If a sample tests preliminarily positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn from the hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most sophisticated methodology to conduct.

Confirmation of positive screening results is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples presumed positive are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the guidelines set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair program and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, contrary to urine tests which have a shorter window.
  • Difficulty in falsification: Cheating a hair drug test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Tracks historical consumption: It offers a record of drug usage over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to appear in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly titled "hair follicle tests," the examination focuses on the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
