Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in New Union, Alabama. For individuals requiring hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise in hair testing is supported by our testing centers available across all cities nationwide. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically needed from the crown or other body areas. Our analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other tailor-made testing solutions.

In recent times, there's been a growing reliance on hair follicle drug tests for substance detection. An increasing number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. These tests are favored by organizations with strict anti-drug policies and by courts for probationers due to their longer detection period—up to 90 days—and improved collection integrity, minimizing cheating. Yet, for detection within the past 5 days, urine tests remain unparalleled.

What it is, How it works

Hair exams have emerged as an influential instrument for detecting substance use. Hair offers an extended timeline of substances by encasing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal up to a roughly 90-day period for alcohol and drug detection. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 hairs (similar to the girth of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, suitable for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional components, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is optimal. It is advisable to measure the sample on a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair not be an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. Mention of head hair indicates scalp hair solely. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The lab-based processing for a drug test result encompasses four critical steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the introductory process of integrating a sample into a lab’s framework. This step ensures that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any data entry lacking in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening conducts an initial, succinct assessment for substance abuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal proceedings. Any samples initially positive in Screening need additional validation.

For samples deemed initially positive during Screening, more hair is used from the original collection and set for Extraction. Here, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower levels than methods like urine or saliva tests, explaining why hair drug screening is particularly challenging.

Validation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS methods. All initially positive samples undergo washing pre-validation as required. The entire lab process from Accessioning through Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug usage up to 90 days, whereas urine assessments have a more limited time frame.
  • Hard to deceive: Deceiving a hair drug test is quite challenging, ensuring more accurate outcomes.
  • Shows usage history: It can reflect a drug use pattern over duration, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug assessments incur higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Result discrepancies: Variables such as hair pigment and personal hair growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand rather than the sub-scalp hair follicle

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing surpasses urine testing in New Union, AL through enhanced accuracy and reliability. Unlike urine tests, hair analyses present a detailed overview of an individual's drug history by covering a longer detection window. Employers and legal authorities appreciate the ability to observe an extended timeframe of drug usage, providing a comprehensive insight beyond that of traditional urine tests.

The superior reliability comes from robust testing procedures that effectively identify even the smallest drug traces, ensuring that every analysis offers precise and trustworthy results. This advantage makes hair testing a leading choice for those committed to upholding strict substance-free environments.

Extended Detection Window

The extended detection window of hair follicle testing in New Union, AL, showcases the ability to track substance use over 90 days. This feature grants employers detailed insight into employees’ or candidates’ histories, enabling informed decisions. The longevity of hair's memory regarding drug intake is a vital tool for those requiring an extensive view of an individual's past substance use.

This expansive detection period empowers the tests to cover more ground compared to traditional methods, promising not only comprehensive assessments but a reliable timeline of substance exposure that conventional urine tests cannot match. Such capabilities bolster the test as a fundamental element in drug screening processes.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Hair follicle testing in New Union, AL offers a robust safeguard against tampering, providing trusted results that minimize the risk of adulteration. Sample integrity is a key strength, ensuring that results are both reliable and difficult to manipulate, unlike some other testing methods. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
