In Paint Rock, Alabama, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing. For those requiring drug or alcohol assessments, our specialized hair testing is available nationwide, including numerous testing centers across various cities. Generally, strands ranging from 1.5 to 2 inches from the head crown or body are needed. These tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, as well as customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have grown in popularity as a drug testing method, replacing conventional urine tests for many employers, courts, and substance abuse experts. Those enforcing strict drug-free protocols opt for hair tests due to their extended detection window of approximately 90 days and highly secure collection process, reducing the likelihood of test evasion. Yet, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a potent method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. By retaining biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shafts, hair reveals a comprehensive timeline of alcohol and other substances use. When hair is sampled near the scalp, it offers an approximate detection period of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. The collection process is straightforward, tampering is challenging, and shipping is uncomplicated.

A 1.5-inch hair segment comprising roughly 200 strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil’s thickness) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional assessments, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a recommendation of 150mg is given. It's suggested to use a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be utilized. References to head hair indicate solely scalp hair. All other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.) are classified as body hair.

Process Overview

The drug testing process in laboratories encompasses four pivotal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where a sample is initially processed into a laboratory’s system. This phase ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigns it a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary cursory examination for drug abuse indicators. Although Screening offers a cost-efficient way to exclude drug use in most samples, any positive result needs confirmation for court admissibility. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample yield a presumptive positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations than other testing methods (such as urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Confirmation for any positive result in Screening employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Presumptively positive samples undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The entire lab process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug tests are capable of identifying drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that feature a limited detection period.
  • Resistance to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Reflects historical patterns: It can indicate drug use patterns over a time frame, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: A period of 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Variabilities such as hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair testing offers superior detection accuracy compared to traditional urine tests in Paint Rock, AL. Hair follicle tests detect drugs over months, while urine tests offer a shorter window. The reliability of hair testing ensures a more comprehensive picture of substance use, making it a favored method for thorough evaluations.

Extended Detection Window

Hair follicle testing in Paint Rock, AL provides an extended detection window of up to 90 days. This lengthy period gives employers a significant advantage, enabling them to view a more comprehensive substance use history of their employees or applicants, ensuring a safer and more informed hiring decision process.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Paint Rock, AL, hair follicle tests present a nearly tamper-resistant method. Unlike other tests, hair samples are less likely to be adulterated, providing results that are dependable and trustworthy. This resistance to tampering makes hair tests an essential tool for organizations seeking authentic outcomes.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
