Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Pennington, Alabama. Should you require a hair-based drug or alcohol test, we specialize in this area with testing facilities in every city across the nation ready to conduct such tests. Generally, a hair length of 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp or body is necessary. Hair tests offer analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing choices.

Hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method in recent years. This type of test is increasingly demanded by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals as a substitute for traditional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and individuals on probation frequently utilize these tests. Longer detection periods, typically up to 90 days, are a major advantage, alongside observed collection that prevents tampering, although urine tests remain most accurate for drug use detection within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair sampling has increasingly been recognized as a potent method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When procured near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and other drugs extending up to approximately 3 months. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of around 200 hair strands (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional components, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg specimen is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When discussing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial incorporation of the sample into a laboratory's operations. This step includes confirming that the specimen was sealed and dispatched appropriately, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening entails an initial brief evaluation for drug misuse. Though Screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug consumption in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be admissible in legal proceedings. Samples showing presumptive positives during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

For samples indicated as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the certification to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenge to deceive: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insights: It can illustrate a trend of drug use over extended periods, not merely recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: Detectability of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Typically, hair drug tests are pricier than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Certain factors like hair color and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: While commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
