Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Perdido, Alabama. Specializing in hair drug and alcohol tests, we offer our services via numerous testing centers nationwide. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is needed. These tests evaluate for drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other specialized options.

Recent protocols have increasingly adopted hair follicle drug assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair evaluations over urine analyses. Hair follicle tests appeal to zero-tolerance employers, legal systems, and probationers due to extended detection periods of up to 90 days, making tampering nearly impossible. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent use in the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drugs by encapsulating biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When gathered close to the scalp, hair offers up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp will produce 100mg of hair, which is the perfect sample amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It’s best to weigh the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is not obtainable, a similar quantity of body hair can be collected. When we mention head hair, we're indicating scalp hair only. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages involved in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary processing of a sample into a lab's system. This incorporates verifying that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data entry not offered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial rapid check for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical way to dismiss drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be permissible in legal settings. Any samples that appear presumptively positive in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample turns out to be presumptively positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the initial sample for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests possess a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably challenging to deceive a hair drug test, contributing to more accurate outcomes.
  • Offers longitudinal data: It can reveal a drug use pattern over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent usage: A period of around 5-7 days is needed for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs compared to other testing methodologies.
  • Inconsistencies in results: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the hair follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
