Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Phil Campbell, Alabama. For hair drug or alcohol testing needs, Accredited Drug Testing excels, with locations in numerous cities across the nation ready to perform hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is necessary. Hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing options.

The trend in drug testing now frequently includes hair follicle assessments. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle tests are essential for organizations with zero-tolerance policies, probation individuals, and courts. This test's key benefit is its extended detection period for drug use, typically up to 90 days, using monitored collection, making it nearly cheat-proof. However, urine tests still hold the edge in detecting drug use within the last 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended timeline of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. Obtaining hair near the scalp can reveal up to roughly a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will offer 100mg of hair, which is the optimum sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, it is advisable to have 150mg of the specimen. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair is permissible. By head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the primary processing of a sample into a laboratory system. This step ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and shipped, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid check for drug misuse. Although it’s an economical means of excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted and prepped for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are retrieved from hair at a much lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most complex methodology to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation, as needed. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is nearly impossible, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Provides a historical pattern: It reveals a trend of drug use over a longer duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent consumption: Drugs are typically detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is actually conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Phil Campbell, AL, recognizes the advantages of hair follicle testing over urine tests. Hair testing provides superior detection capabilities, capturing a broader window of drug use. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
