Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Pine Ridge, Alabama. If a test for drugs or alcohol in hair is needed, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair assessments, with centers nationwide equipped to conduct such tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required for testing. Hair analysis can reveal drugs, alcohol/ETG, or feature other tailored testing solutions.

Recently, drug testing trends increasingly favor hair follicle tests over urine analysis. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts are opting for hair tests in lieu of traditional urine exams. Zero-tolerance employers, judicial services, and probationary programs prefer hair follicle testing due to its extended detection window, spanning up to 90 days. Hair tests, conducted through monitored collection, are notoriously difficult to falsify but may not cover drug usage within the preceding five days as accurately as urine tests.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a highly effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive timeline of drug and alcohol usage by encasing biomarkers within its growing fibers. When obtained near the scalp, hair can offer an approximate three-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of around 200 strands of hair (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or screenings exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It is recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unobtainable, a similar amount of body hair can be used. The term 'head hair' refers specifically to scalp hair, while 'body hair' encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result entails four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves verifying proper sealing and shipment of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any supplementary data not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid assessment for drug substances. While being a cost-effective method to rule out drug use for most samples, a positive screening requires confirmation for legal proceedings. Any sample that tests preliminarily positive during Screening mandates further validation.

If a sample yields a presumptively positive result during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), underscoring the complexity of hair drug testing.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo necessary washes before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair drug testing can reveal drug activity up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited detection span.
  • High resistance to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical usage data: It provides a chronological pattern of drug use, offering more than just recent consumption insights.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent usage: Detection in hair takes approximately 5-7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically costlier than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual growth disparities can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While commonly termed "hair follicle tests", these tests analyze the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
